

She grew up in the Paw Creek area of Charlotte, the daughter of the late John Blair Cox and Elsie Cathey Cox. Betty was a graduate of West Mecklenburg High School, Class of 1964. She studied music and music theory at Brevard College and Queens College.
Betty was an accomplished pianist and organist, who possessed a beautiful singing voice. For many years, she played and sang at various Charlotte churches and restaurants. Betty always had a smile on her face and a kind word for others.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Donald Cox and Willis Cox. She is survived by her son, Timothy Barnette and his wife, Kimberly and daughter Amanda Hamilton and her husband, Michael; grandchildren Timothy James Barnette, Jr., Logan Hunter Barnette, and Lauren Grace Hamilton; great-grandchildren Oaklyn Rae Barnette and Stella Marie Barnette. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Sarah Cox and her partner of forty years Peter Goldberg. A graveside service will be held Thursday, the 2nd of July, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
