

Betty Pope Cartee, age 92, of Charlotte, NC, passed away peacefully at Willow Brooke Nursing Home at Matthews Glen on Tuesday, August 20, 2024. Born in Charlotte, she was the daughter of the late Oscar Earl Pope and Marie Miller Pope. Betty was preceded in death by her beloved husband, M. Gary Cartee, Sr., and her son, M. Gary Cartee, Jr.
She is survived by her granddaughter, Deanna Cartee Smith, and her husband, Brian L. Smith, along with their children, Lily Claire and Carter Smith of Mooresville, NC. Betty is also survived by her brother, O. Earl Pope of Hawley, MA, her two nephews, and their families.
Betty lived in the Elizabeth and Cotswold areas of Charlotte for most of her life and spent her most recent years at Matthews Glen Independent Living. She was a Charter Member of Covenant Presbyterian Church. Betty graduated from Central High School and attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She had a distinguished career as the former Secretary and Treasurer of Bland Hotels and later pursued a career in Real Estate.
Betty enjoyed attending her great-grandchildren’s dance recitals and sporting events. She loved reading fiction novels, spending time at the beach, and eating fresh seafood. Betty also enjoyed playing bridge and traveling with friends and family. She was an avid Tar Heel fan, a legacy that continues through her great-grandchildren, Lily Claire and Carter.
Her family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the nurses and staff of Willow Brooke Magnolia Lane at Matthews Glen and VIA Health Partners Hospice of Charlotte for their care, compassion, and support during her illness.
A graveside service will be held for family and friends at Sharon Memorial Park, 5716 Monroe Rd, Charlotte, NC 28212, at 11 am on Friday, August 30, 2024. The family will receive friends following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Betty P. Cartee’s name to VIA Health Partners Hospice, 7845 Little Ave, Charlotte, NC 28226.
