Betty was born in Polkville, NC on September 19, 1926 and raised in Shelby by her parents Clint and Iva Jane Parker Owens. She moved to Charlotte and began work for Southern Bell in 1943. Betty retired from Southern Bell in 1979 after 35 years of service. She was preceded in death by her husband Ted Knight, son Sam McElhaney, grandson Scott McElhaney, brothers Jim and George Martin.
Betty is survived by her son Tom McElhaney and wife Jane, daughter-in-law Jenny McElhaney, sister Carolyn Jane Spurling, five grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held 2:00p.m., Wednesday, November 18 in Sharon Memorial Park with Dr. Matthew S. Brown officiating.
