Betty Greene Mulliss, wife of the late William Frederick Mulliss, died at Presbyterian Hospital on October 7, 2018, after a lengthy illness. Born in Charlotte, the daughter of Fred Adams Greene and Sara Kendall Greene, she was educated in the Charlotte public schools and graduated with many honors from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. Her parents and her husband of twenty-seven years predeceased her.
Mrs. Mulliss was employed by Swinson Food Products and later served on the staff of the Helms, Mulliss, McMillan & Johnston law firm. In later life, her quiet warmth and competence found an outlet in volunteer service at Myers Park Presbyterian Church. As a resident at nearby 800 Cherokee, one of Charlotte’s first residential condominiums, she served for many years as Secretary of the Board, writing complete and accurate minutes of the proceedings.
Thereafter, as a resident of the Sharon Towers Continuing Care Retirement Community, she was known for her knitting and needlepoint handiwork, producing many products for charity, especially the neo-natal clinic at Presbyterian Hospital. She carefully used her private foundation to deliver charitable grants, particularly to those charities adhering to the reformed tradition of the Christian church and those seeking to prevent and ameliorate human suffering.
During her years of declining health, she was cared for in her apartment in a most loving way by Vena Pesaru and others at Care Haven Senior Home Care, and by the staff of Sharon Towers.
A private burial service will be held at Forest Lawn West Cemetery. A memorial service in her memory will be held in the Chapel of Myers Park Presbyterian Church at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 12, 2018. Memorials may be sent to Myers Park Presbyterian Church, 2501 Oxford Place, Charlotte, North Carolina 28207.
