Betty Jane Pelton

Betty Jane Pelton, 89, passed away late Monday evening, April 24, 2017 at CMC-University Hospital.

Born in Johnson City, NY on July 18, 1927, she was a daughter of the late Martin and Jenny Tuttle Hartman.

After graduating from Johnson City Schools, Betty attended Syracuse University NY at Binghamton and later obtained her B.A. in Psychology, M.S. in Elementary Education and M.S. in Guidance Counseling from State University College of New York at Oneonta. For many years she taught kindergarten and first grade.

Betty, who loved Christmas, took great pleasure in helping those less fortunate during the holiday season. She was an active member of Back Creek Church (ARP) and the Eastern Star serving as their pianist.

Her husband, Jay C. Pelton, preceded her in death on July 19, 2000.

Survivors include a daughter, Georgianna Barnhill and her husband, Vance Clayton “Clay” Barnhill II; and three grandchildren, Michael Shields, Casey Barnhill and Vance Barnhill.

Friends may visit Thursday, April 27, 2017 at McEwen Derita Chapel, 6300 Mallard Creek Rd., Charlotte, NC 28262 from 7 to 9 pm. Funeral services are planned for 2:00 pm Saturday, April 29, 2017 at Back Creek Church (ARP), 1821 Back Creek Church Rd, Charlotte, NC 28213 where friends may also visit an hour before the services. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
