

She was educated in Charlotte Mecklenburg schools, graduating from Oakhurst High School and Hollingsworth Business School. During WWII she was employed in Asheville, N.C, by General Accounting office and in Charlotte by the Civilian Retirement Records Branch, where she was President of the Employee Welfare Association. Her final employment was with Rapistan of Grand Rapids, Michigan of Charlotte, NC, where she retired after 30 years. She married Maurice Eugene Terwilliger in 1946 and they enjoyed their retirement years boating and traveling. She was a long time member of Sharon Presbyterian Church, but joined New Perth ARP Church after moving to Troutman, NC. She was in the Lois B. Hood Sunday school class and Prayer Circle #1.
She was preceded in death by her parents and infant son, Jon Erich Terwilliger, husband Marty Terwilliger, sister Anne Fleming, three brothers Robert Clyde, Joe Shannon, and Charles Henderson DeArmond.
Betty was a long-time member of the DAR and was regent of her chapter in Charlotte for six years and was voted a “Lifetime Regent.”
She was an active member of the UDC Stonewall Jackson Chapter 220, and was President of her chapter for 13 years. Betty was also a past member of the Daughters of the American Colonies.
She is survived by her daughter Erica Thaxton and husband Gary, granddaughter Amy Josey, her husband Curt and great-grandchildren Curtis, Dylan, and Ella Josey, granddaughter Emily Bowers, her husband Andy and great-grandchildren Elizabeth, Tanner, and Taylor Bowers as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Betty Terwilliger was one of the kindest, most loving people anyone could ever meet. She meant so much to so many, and will be truly missed. We will keep her alive through memories, and by passing everything we learned from her down to the next generation. She has found peace, and we are all the better for having known her, and to have been loved by her.
There will be a drop in at the daughters home, 135 Windemere Isle Road, Troutman, NC on Tuesday, May 9, 2017 beginning at 5:00pm. Visitation will take place at McEwen Funeral Service, 5716 Monroe Road, Charlotte on Wednesday, May 10, 2017 beginning at 12:00pm. Service will follow at 1:00pm. Interment will take place at Sharon Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice & Palliative Care of Iredell County.
