Charlotte - Cal Mitchell died peacefully at his home on March 21, 2018. He was born in Charlotte, NC on February 13, 1935. Cal is survived by his beloved wife, Tanya; sister, Mary May Gillespie; two nephews and spouses, Bill and Alicia Choate and David and Sinclair Gillespie; great-nephews, Will and Mitchell Choate and Richard, Walker and Harrison Gillespie. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Judy Means; his niece, Ashley Brooker; and great-nephews, Caleb and Jacob Reimiller.
Cal graduated from Myers Park High School in their second graduating class and from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a degree in business. While at UNC he played on the Varsity Golf Team and participated in numerous intramural sports. After he received a commission in the Army, he joined his father in the appliance and real estate businesses, becoming President of Southern Appliances, Inc. and Mitchell Properties, Inc. Cal was a member of Myers Park Presbyterian Church.
Cal loved the outdoors: golf, tennis, skiing, hiking, and fishing. His idea of a perfect day was any activity spent in the sunshine with family and friends. He was a member of Quail Hollow Club and Elk River Club. While a member of Carmel Country Club, he won the Men's Club Championship five consecutive years. He was known by his golf buddies to attempt to hit a "high two-iron fade". Cal was a kind, generous, loving man, an optimist who saw the best in everyone.
To remember Cal and celebrate a life well-lived, his family will receive friends from 4:00-6:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 25, at the home of Alicia and Bill Choate, 2241 Pinewood Circle, Charlotte. Funeral services for Cal will be private.
