

Carolyn Phillips Henderson died in Charlotte on June 5, 2012. She was born on March 15, 1920 in Chatham, NJ, the daughter of George Hamill Hogeman and Gladys Moore Hogeman. She leaves three children, Kathryn (Doug) King of New Bern, NC, John (Robin) Phillips of Ridgefield, CT and Thomas (Lisa) Phillips of Charlotte; and five grandchildren, Mark, Gwen, Anna-Christina, Katherine and Theodore Phillips. She also leaves three step-children, Alma Henderson (Dennis Heidenfeldt, Sr.) of Mount Morris, MI, Judith (Mark) Thorne of Mount Prospect, IL, and Richard (Linda) Henderson of Laurel, MD. She is survived by a sister, Elizabeth Melick of Bath, PA. She was predeceased by her daughter, Ann L. Phillips; two brothers, Theodore H. Hogeman, and George L. Hogeman; and by her husbands, Howard E. Phillips and Frank B. Henderson. She is also survived by an extended family of nieces, nephews, cousins and great-grandchildren of whom she was very fond.
Carolyn Henderson was graduated from Mount Holyoke College in 1941. She began working for A.T.&T. Company in New York City and left in 1943 to join the American Red Cross, where she served in Hawaii. When the war closed she returned to A.T.&T. in New York. In 1953 she was married to Howard E. Phillips, who was Engineering Manager-Buildings for A.T.&T., and they lived in Madison, NJ with their four children. Mr. Phillips died in 1968.
Mrs. Henderson later lived on Martha’s Vineyard, MA and in 1987 she was married to Frank B. Henderson. After living in Mount Prospect, IL for eight years, she and her husband moved to Charlotte to the Aldersgate Methodist Retirement Community in 1995. Mr. Henderson died in 2006.
Mrs. Henderson was a gracious woman who encouraged others to achieve their goals. Thanks to her tutelage, her substantial cooking and knitting skills have been seen in subsequent generations. Her love of travel, reading and opera was infectious. Her family is grateful for her full and long life.
A celebration of her life will be held June 15th at 2:00 p.m. in the Francis Chapel of Myers Park United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends in Jubilee Hall following the service.
