Catherine Biondo Micallef Jillings, a strong and remarkable Sicilian woman whose life was defined by courage, resilience, and devotion to her family, passed away peacefully on October 10, 2026, at the age of 95, at Windsor Run Senior Living facility in Matthews, North Carolina. She would have celebrated her 96th birthday in December.
Born in Tunisia to a Sicilian family, Catherine carried her heritage and traditions with her throughout an extraordinary life that took her across continents and through many chapters of love, loss, and new beginnings.
Catherine married Antoine Micallef, who was French-Maltese with Italian heritage. Together, they began their life as a young family in London, England, where they lived for ten years and welcomed their two daughters, Ersilia and Marla. Their journey continued to Canada, where their son, Rudy, was born. After three years in Canada, the family moved to the United States, seeking a new beginning and pursuing Antoine’s dream of coming to America.
Tragically, not long after arriving in the United States, Antoine was diagnosed with cancer. He passed away at just 36 years old, leaving Catherine to raise their three young children on her own.
What followed revealed the extraordinary strength of Catherine’s character. In a foreign country, surrounded by an unfamiliar language and facing an uncertain future, she had to learn English and enter the workforce for the first ever since her marriage. With determination and courage, she worked tirelessly to keep her family together and build a future for her children in the country their father had dreamed of calling home.
Catherine was a fighter in every sense of the word. She faced life’s hardships with the toughness and determination of a true Italian woman, never giving up on her family. Her journey was not always easy, but her strength carried her through, and she created a home and a life for her children in South Charlotte, North Carolina.
Catherine married for a second time to Emil Jillings, beginning another chapter in her life. She would ultimately survive both of her husbands, carrying the memories of the life they shared with her through the years.
Despite the distance from her birthplace, Catherine never forgot her roots. Whenever possible, she traveled back to Sicily with her family to visit loved ones and remain connected to the people, traditions,
and heritage that meant so much to her.
Catherine lived an incredible 95 years. She witnessed the world change, crossed borders, endured heartbreaking loss, and found the strength to begin again. Above all, she was a devoted mother and grandmother whose determination and sacrifices helped shape the lives of her children and grandson.
Her story is one of courage, perseverance, and a love for family that never wavered.
Catherine is survived by her three children, Ersilia her husband Gary Weinreb, Marla, Rudy his wife Cat, and her grandson, Michael Micallef. Her memory will live on through her family, the values she instilled in them, and the remarkable example she set through the life she lived.
Though she is no longer with us, Catherine’s strength, spirit, and love will remain forever in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. Her journey was long, her life was extraordinary, and her legacy will continue through the family she held together with so much courage and love.
A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Matthew Catholic Church on Thursday, October 29, 2026 in the chapel at 12:45 pm. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery.
May she rest in eternal peace.
