Chuck served admirably and courageously in the Army for 20 years, during which time he deployed as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom. During his service, he received numerous awards, including the NC National Guard Commendation Ribbon and several Military Merits before retiring as Sergeant in 2009.
Chuck had a multitude of hobbies and interests that allowed him to live life to the fullest. He spent much of his free time hunting, RV camping, riding motorcycles, and traveling. He also found great joy in classic cars and muscle cars – and he especially loved his Polaris Slingshot.
Chuck's brother-in-law, Duane, wrote some poignant words that we felt it was important to include. He said, “Chuck survived a triple gunshot wound, two tours of duty in Iraq, had severed his knee in a construction accident, retired from the US Army and continued life donating his good will and hard earned money to those less fortunate. Ever in good spirit, he was also in perfect health until this thing nobody can even see snuck into his body and destroyed him from within…so from this experience I share with you, I hope that you pass it on so no one else you know will suffer from the heartache unfolding in front of us. COVID is deadly and don’t let anyone you know think otherwise.”
Chuck is survived by his children, Charles Johnson, Jr., Martie Johnson, Joseph (Teresa) Johnson, and Phillip Johnson; his step-daughter, Tina; his grandchildren, CJ, Kayla, Ethan, Brandon, Ezra, Dylan, and Derrick; his siblings, Leon Ryerson, Louise (Frosty) Ayer, Bonnie Johnson, Laura (Normand) Hudon, Robert (Corrine) Johnson, Jr., Douglas (Kelly) Morgan, Keith Morgan, Nancy (Duane) Niswender, and Holly (Mark) Tasber; his friend and ex-wife, Vicky Johnson; neighbors and best friends, Ron, Mike, and Chris; as well as numerous loving nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
Chuck was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Johnson, Sr. and Bessie Magee; siblings, David Morgan and Grace Betz; and his former Staff Sergeant and close friend, Rodger Clay.
