

CHARLOTTE - Dr. Charles R. McAdams, Jr. “Charlie”, 95, passed away on March 23, 2017 at Sharon Towers. He was born July 3, 1921 in Belmont, NC, son of the late Dr. Charles Rupert McAdams and Grace Ezell McAdams.
He attended Belmont public schools, became an Eagle Scout, and graduated from Duke University and Jefferson Medical School in Philadelphia, where he met Bette Jane Silcox, the love of his life. Charlie served in the U. S. Navy, including participation in Operation High Jump, an expedition to establish a research station in Antarctica. While in the Navy, Charlie married Bette in New Orleans, and after his discharge they settled in Charlotte, where Charlie established his general practice before moving to Chapel Hill for a surgical residency. Following his residency he returned to Charlotte, where he practiced general surgery until his retirement in 1985.
In addition to providing his many years of medical service, Charlie served the Charlotte community through his active participation in the Charlotte Civitan Club and Lake Wylie Marine Commission and his membership on the boards of the Methodist Home and YMCA Camp Thunderbird. He became proficient in each of the many hobbies he pursued, including aviation, blacksmithing, boating, fishing, and amateur meteorology. Charlie’s getaway was “The River", a vacation house on Lake Wylie that continues to be loved by his children and grandchildren.
Dr. McAdams is survived by his daughter, Barbara McAdams Thompson and husband Tom of Charlotte, NC; sons, Charles Rupert McAdams III and wife Victoria of Williamsburg, VA and Edward Judson McAdams and wife Lynne of Charlotte, NC; grandchildren: Harry Morton (Bo) Thompson IV and wife Scottie, Charles Bennett Thompson and wife Lauren, Craig McAdams Thompson and wife Ellen of Raleigh, NC, Charles Rupert McAdams IV of Arlington VA, Edward Judson McAdams Jr. and wife Ginger, Charles Scott McAdams, Matthew Leighton McAdams and wife Jordan, and Rebecca McAdams Smith and husband Owen of Charleston, SC; and great-grandchildren: Jane McAdams Thompson, Harry Marshall Thompson, Louise Drouillard Thompson, Mary Fields Thompson, Mary-Loughton Silcox Thompson, Edward Judson McAdams III, Elizabeth Harrison McAdams, George Wicker McAdams, and Mary Leighton McAdams.
Visitation will be held from 6 until 8 pm on Monday, March 27, 2017 at Harry & Bryant, 500 Providence Road, Charlotte. A memorial service to honor the life of Dr. McAdams will be held in the Harry & Bryant Chapel at 2 pm Tuesday, March 28, with the Reverend G. William Climer, Jr. officiating. Private interment will follow at Sharon Memorial Park.
