
Clara was born on September 16, 1929, in Swannanoa, North Carolina, to the late Addie Adkins and Hardy Allen. She was the second of four children, growing up alongside her late siblings: Rheba Ray (Lawrence), Ruby Gregg (Don), and Jack Allen (Peggy).
Clara graduated from Swannanoa High School and continued her education at Blanton’s Business College. She went on to work as a dedicated school secretary for over 30 years before retiring.
On August 15, 1953, Clara married the love of her life, James Kenneth “Kenny” Mills. They shared over 68 wonderful years of marriage, building a life together rooted in faith, family, and community.
In 1959, Clara became a devoted member of Pineville United Methodist Church, where she remained active for more than six decades. Her service included chairing multiple church committees, serving as a Stephen Minister for 15 years, and playing a key role in bringing a new organ to the church. Clara was also instrumental in establishing the church’s “Room in the Inn” ministry, which provided shelter and compassion to those in need.
Clara enjoyed cooking, reading, and spending time with her beloved grandchildren.
Clara is survived by her two children, Kaye (Pat) Bunn of Spartanburg, SC and Jeff (Denise) Mills of Weddington, NC; five grandchildren, Allen (Mirna) Bunn, Jason (Rebecca) Mills, Addie (James) Thompson, Ryan (Ashley) Mills, and Adam (Caroline) Bunn; Eight great-grandchildren, Mac, Wilson and Anderson Mills, Louise and Hardy Thompson, Dorothy Mills, and Hugh and Betsy Bunn.
Clara’s love for her family, church, and community touched the lives of many, and her memory will be cherished by all who knew her.
A service will be held on Thursday, September 4, 2025 at 11:00 am at Pineville United Methodist Church (110 S Polk St, Pineville, NC 28134). Burial will immediately follow.
