

Clarence Edward Smith died March 23, 2016, in Charlotte. He was born September 19, 1927, in Harnett County, North Carolina. He was one of three sons to Beulah Cameron Smith and Robert Stokes Smith. He served in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1947 and earned a World War II victory medal. He later earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Shaw University in North Carolina, where he was a member of the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity. He also earned a High School Teacher’s Certificate in biology, chemistry, general science and mathematics.
He relocated to the New York City area to work as a chemist, retiring from Sanitrol Inc. in Newark, N.J. Following his retirement, he was very active in the Rockaway Golden K. Kiwanis Club. In Charlotte, he lived at The Laurels in Highland Creek.
Clarence Smith is preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy, and brother, Levander Smith. He leaves to cherish his memories his daughters, Alleyne Smith and Celeste Smith; his brother, John Robert Smith, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Services are planned for 3:00 pm Friday, March 25, 2016, at McEwen Funeral Service-Derita Chapel, 6300 Mallard Creek Road, Charlotte, NC. Friends may visit from 1 to 3 pm Friday at the funeral home.
The burial will take place in Cypress Hills Cemetery in Brooklyn, NY.
