
Leland was born September 15, 1945, to Woodrow and Dessie Hughes in Seneca, SC. He departed this life on June 6, 2013, after a long illness. He is survived by his wife, Dianne; a step-daughter, Monica Liberatore, South Jordan, UT; a step-son, Randall Russell, Saltville, VA; two grandsons, Dustin and Seth; one granddaughter, Logan; four brothers, Kassler & Gerry Hughes of Cowpens, SC, Wallace & Maryann Hughes of North Augusta, SC, Howard & Sandra Hughes of Atlanta, GA, and Dennis & Beth Hughes of Athens, GA; six nieces, three nephews and a host of friends.
The absolute joy of his life was coaching high school football, golf and track, which he did for 30+ years in Georgia and North and South Carolina. He enjoyed sharing his love of the sport with the young men who played for him throughout the years and he loved teaching at every level. He was blessed with lasting friendships with many of these young men who have stayed in touch through the years.
A celebration of his life will be held on Sunday, June 9, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. at Higher Ground Church, 8365 Possum Hollow Rd., Fort Mill, SC 29707, with Rev. Steve Jacks officiating. The family will receive friends at the church at 1:30 p.m. The family is being assisted by the McEwen-Pineville Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to Agape` Hospice, 815 West Meeting Street, Lancaster, SC 29720.
