Collin Steed

Mr. Collin Franklin Steed, 93, of Charlotte, NC went home to be with his Lord Wednesday, April 20, 2022 after a long illness. He was surrounded by the love of his family and died peacefully at Novant Presbyterian Medical Center.

Mr. Steed was born September 9, 1928, son of Margaret Westmoreland Steed and Collins Francis Steed, brother of Frances Steed Pruitt and Margaret Steed Sams. Mr. Steed was preceded in death by his loving wife of 64 years, Loraine Gathings Steed.

A life-long resident of Mecklenburg County, Collin was a member of Midwood Baptist Church. He was the proud caretaker of his wife Loraine prior to her death in 2011. Mr. Steed was a faithful provider to his family of six, and affectionately became “Pawpaw” to his many grandchildren. He was a lover of dogs, country music, and the Atlanta Braves.

Mr. Steed served in the United States Navy and was stationed in Norfolk, VA. He was a local truck driver for Johnson Motor Lines in Charlotte, NC for 25 years. He then became a mechanic for Air-Vac, Inc. until his retirement in 1993.

He is survived by his two sons, Roger Steed and wife Donna of Charlotte, NC; Billy Steed and wife Millie of Oakboro, NC; daughters Amy Currie and her husband Cliff of Monroe, NC; and Rev. Terri Steed Pierce and wife Kim of Orlando, FL; Grandchildren Ryan Steed and wife Karyn of Marshville, NC; Raymond Steed and wife Erica of Stanfield, NC; Michelle Helms and husband Brandon of Midland, NC; Sandi Milhazes and husband Alex of Indian Trail, NC; Matt Currie and wife Angie of Indian Trail, NC; Megan Currie and fiancée Roxy of Atlanta, GA; Troy Allen and wife Katie of Statesville, NC; Great grandchildren Brianna, Brooklyn, Austin, Ryan, Jayden, and Caleb Steed; Kolby, Kameron, and Korbin Helms; Emma Currie; Ian, Dexter, and Amelia Allen. Mr. Steed is also survived by his special friend, Flo Sowell.

A celebration of his life will be held at the McEwen Funeral Service at Sharon Memorial Park, 5716 Monroe Road, Charlotte, NC on Saturday, April 23, 2022 at 12 pm. The family will receive friends from 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM prior to the funeral service. A graveside service will be held immediately following the service at the Gethsemane Memorial Gardens 1520 W. Sugar Creek Road, NC, 28262. The Rev. Garry Baldwin and The Rev. Terri Steed Pierce will be officiating the service. Bearing the casket of Mr. Steed will be Ryan and Raymond Steed, Matt Currie, Brandon Helms, Alex Milhazes, and Troy Allen.

The family would like to thank Harris Hospice Unit at Novant Presbyterian for their compassion and excellent care.
