David was born in Minot, North Dakota, and grew up in Long Prairie, Minnesota. After graduating from Hamline University, he began his career with General Electric as a salesman in the Commercial Lighting Division. He built a successful career spanning more than 35 years with the company. While his position brought him to Erie, Pennsylvania, it was there that he met his future wife, Harriet Allen. They were married on October 19, 1968.
Following their marriage, David and Harriet moved to Buffalo, New York, where they raised their two children, Sarah and Eric. During their years in Buffalo, David was an active member of Christ United Methodist Church in Snyder, New York, singing in the church choir. He also served as President of the Amherst Swim Club for several years, volunteering countless hours to help grow the sport of swimming in the Buffalo area for his children and many others to enjoy.
In 1997, after 35 years with General Electric, David and Harriet retired to Destin, Florida, where they spent 19 wonderful years. David was an active member of Destin United Methodist Church, serving on the Board of Trustees and playing an instrumental role in the construction of the Destin Life Center. He also served on numerous community committees, including as President of the Regatta Bay HOA and on the Advisory Board of Golf for the Regatta Bay Golf Club. Despite his many volunteer commitments, he always found time for a round of golf and relaxing by the pool.
In 2020, David and Harriet moved to Wellmore Assisted Living in Tega Cay, South Carolina, a blessing that allowed them to receive additional medical care and be closer to family. After Harriet’s passing in 2023, David made one final move to The Charlotte Assisted Living facility, where he received additional support as he battled dementia.
Dave loved music and loved to sing. Even in his final days, his deep baritone voice could be heard through the halls as he sang to friends in memory care. He was an avid sports fan, especially of the Buffalo Bills, and he and Harriet were proud season ticket holders for 30 years. He also enjoyed college football and watching golf on the weekends.
David was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Helen Dokken, and his beloved wife, Harriet. He is survived by his daughter, Sarah (Greg) Leifer of Delray Beach, Florida; his son, Eric (Christine) Dokken of Charlotte, North Carolina; and his grandchildren, Ryan Noah and Hailey Rose.
