

David Glenn Phillips, Sr. age 77 of Charlotte, born February 21, 1934, the fifth of nine children of John Robert Phillips and Fannie Mae Helms Phillips died Monday, June 6, 2011. His family was at his bedside at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte, N. C. Funeral services will be at 2:00PM Thursday, June 9, 2011 at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, Reverends Billy Towery and Beverly Parker-Reece officiating. Visitation will be from 7:00-9:00PM Wednesday evening at the church, 1915 Oakdale Road. Interment will Military Rites will be in Pleasant Grove Memorial Park. David attended Long Creek Elementary School and graduated from North Mecklenburg High School in Huntersville. He remained active on his high school alumni committee. After graduating from high school he worked at Associated Transport until he was drafted into the United States Army. He returned to Associated Transport after leaving the military serving as a union shop steward. He retired as a Teamster in 1988. Never one to slow down after retiring , he worked for the 1990 U. S. Census and later for the City of Charlotte, from which he retired in 1996. He also obtained a Real Estate Agents and Brokers license and took courses in equipment repair and furniture re-upholstery. In the Army he served as a military police officer and had a top secret clearance. He was stationed in the Bikini Atoll during testing of nuclear weapons and witnessed the mushroom clouds and aftermath of the explosions. In recent years he regained contact with fellow Atomic Veterans. While in the Arm he eloped to York, South Carolina with his fiancé and wedded Nancy Sue Crump Phillips. The devoted couple just celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary on June 1st. Their happy marriage produced five children, David (Davie) Phillips, Jr., Charles (Chuck) Phillips and Daryl Phillips, Melanie Phillips Mathers and Shawn Phillips. The family enjoyed man happy summers together in Myrtle Beach, S. C. It grew to include David Phillips, Jr’s wife, Neana and their children, David Phillips III, (DG), Brandy Phillips Williams, and Harry Phillips along with Brandy’s husband, Justin, Daryl’s wife, Ginger and their children, Meaghan Phillips, Matthew Phillips, Marc Phillips, and Kyle Phillips, Melanie’s husband, James (Jimmy) Mathers and their children Christopher Mathers and Hillary Matthers, Shawn’s wife, Jennifer and daughter Elizabaeth Mealing (who is a Phillips in everone’s heart). They also have two great grandchildren, Collier and Summer. David and Sue were longtime members of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church. David was serving on the Administrative Board at the time of his death. He was engaged in the church’s charitable works including Room at the Inn, a homeless outrerach and support network , was a frequent volunteer at numerous fundraiser for the Church and was sustaining member of the Madeline Tyson Covenant Class. David was an active participant in the church serving as an Usher, visiting shut-ins and at one time or another served on practically all of the church’s boards and committees. Nothing gave him more pleasure than attending the many sports, theatre, and educational activities of his children and more recently grandchildren. His family and many friends will deeply miss him and will cherish their memories with him for the rest of their lives. David is survived by his sisters, Virginia Pennington and her husband, Jack, Eloise Lockler, Bobbie Mae Wilson and her husband, Alan and Carolyn Watkins and her husband, Mason. He is also survived brother, Foy Lee and Gary. The family remained close and visited weekly. They also traveled and vacationed together frequently. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Brooks and Howard Phillips as well as sister-in-law, Kay Phillips and brother-in-law, Ray Lockler. David had a faithful riding and walking companion, his dog, Precious. In addition to always being a person a friend could count on, David held a special place in his heart for those less fortunate and supported many charitable causes serving their needs. For those wishing to make a charitable donation in the memory of David, the family request donations be made to the Charlotte Rescue Mission, Loaves and Fishes, the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), the Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church or other charity of their choice.
