Denver A. Cunningham

Denver A. Cunningham of Charlotte died on Sunday, the 26th of March, following a brief illness. He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Evelyn Jean, the love of his life. Surviving are his daughter, Cathy, his son, Dan, and two sisters, Gaye Lusk of Stephenson, WV, and Artie Walker, of Lexington, NC. His daughter, Cathy, and her husband, Cliff Pernell, live in Conover, NC. His son, Dan, and his wife, Pamela, live in Lexington, SC. Denver and Evelyn Jean have been residents of Charlotte for over twenty years and have lived at Aldersgate for over ten years.

Denver has four grandchildren: Cathy’s sons Andy (wife Kristen) and Alan Pernell; Dan’s daughter Melissa Sereque (husband David) and son Matt Cunningham (wife Blakely). Mr. Cunningham has seven great children: Andy’s daughter, Kinsley Grace; Matt’s four sons, Rilan, Paxton, Carsten, and Breason; and Melissa’s two daughters, Eden and Eva Sereque.

Originally from West Virginia, Denver served in the US Navy in World War II. He was a radioman stationed in North Africa. He received a degree in Electrical Engineering from Bucknell University immediately after the War. He worked 37 years as an engineer for E.I. DuPont at locations in West Virginia, Delaware, and North Carolina and as a contract engineer in Charlotte briefly after that. His hobbies included woodworking and painting. He loved precision hardwood projects and constructed Shaker-style furniture, beautiful clocks, and three violins of the Stradivarius design. He loved to paint landscapes, pieces of historical interest, and works of the masters. In recent years, he spent hours painting in the arts and crafts area at Aldersgate.

A brief service will be held at the Asbury facility at Aldersgate at 11am on Friday, March 31st. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Providence United Methodist Church at 2810 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC, 28211, for the Christian Home Sunday School Class.
