

Another angel got her wings. Dolores went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ after a long battle with heart disease. She passed away peacefully in her sleep at the Presbyterian Hospital Harris Hospice Unit on January 2, 2011. She was surrounded by her loving family and friends to the end.
Dolores was born May 22, 1931 to the late Harold Franklin and Pearline Martin Harkey. She was preceded in death by her brother William (Bill) F. Harkey and infant brothers Leon Carroll Harkey and Harold Thomas Harkey.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday January 5, 2011 at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church 1915 Oakdale Rd. Charlotte, NC from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. The funeral service will be held on Thursday January 6, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church with the Rev. Owen Peeler and Billy Towery officiating.
Dolores was a native Charlottean and graduated from Berryhill High School in 1950. She started working when she was 14 years old at Woolworths. She was inspired by her father at the age of 16 to begin her career in the trucking industry starting with R.C. Motor Lines in 1950 then onto Associated Transport from there she moved on to Roadway Express where she retired after 40 years of service. After retiring, her love for children led her to become a mentor for young ones in the Gaston County School District where she was known as Mrs. Dee. After mentoring for a while she went on to become a substitute teacher for Gaston County Schools until her health would not allow her to continue.
Having a great love for the Lord, learning and teaching she started teaching Sunday school at a very young age. She was a Sunday school teacher at Pleasant Grove UMC for the Young Adult Class, New Horizons Class and any other class that needed a teacher including the Charles Rinehart Class which she was a devoted member of.
She had many accomplishments throughout her life. She was President of the Pleasant Grove United Methodist Woman and received a Lifetime Membership Award from Pleasant Grove UMC. Dolores was involved in many organizations that included the Oakdale Opti-Mrs. Club where she served as Governor. The American Legion Auxiliary where she served as Dept. Chaplain and as President for Post 353 and was also membership chairman for the Legion Auxiliary of N.C. Her love for writing earned her 1st Place for short stories with the Charlotte Writers Association in which she was a member of also.
Dolores had so much love in her heart that she shared her love with everyone that she knew or met, with a kind word and a smile. She was also an avid beach lover and bird lover.
Her most important accomplishment was sharing her life and love with her husband Horace of 60 years in September of 2010. She will truly be missed by all who survive and love her. Husband Horace, Daughters Joyce and husband Paul Roper, Judy Baker, Jane and husband Charlie Ashe. She was grandmother (Nanny) to Nicholas and wife Kara Tadlock, Ross Baker, Jeremy Ashe and Jessica Ashe Sisters, Patricia Smathers and Sallie Eskew and several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
