Born November 12, 1923 in Greensboro, NC, he was the son of the late Don and Sarah Folk. During the Great Depression he moved with his family to Greenville, SC where he spent his childhood. Following graduation from Greenville High School, Mr. Folk enlisted in the U.S. Army and served his country during WWII.
After his military service, Mr. Folk entered Clemson University when it was still an all-male military school, and received a degree in architecture. His roots sank deeply in the Clemson tradition. He remained a diehard Clemson fan for life and especially loved Clemson football.
Following graduation from Clemson, Don moved to Charlotte and formed a business with Jack Gray, forging relationships with key developers in the city to include Allen Tate and Ben Tillotson. Many of the houses in Charlotte bear his signature. In 1956, he married Betty Rea Folk, and their family grew to include two children, Jean and Alan.
Don was a man of humility, wit and humor who enthroned himself into the hearts of all who knew him. He volunteered for nearly two decades at Presbyterian Hospital and also served meals to shut-ins after his retirement. He lived a life of service to the community and his family and will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege to have known him.
Left to cherish his memory are his children, Alan Folk and Jean Strange; six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
Mr. Folk’s family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 7th at Harry & Bryant, 500 Providence Road. A reception will be held at twelve noon Thursday, September 8th at St. Stephen United Methodist Church, 6800 Sardis Road followed by a service to celebrate Mr. Folk's life at 1:00 p.m. in the church sanctuary. Interment with military honors will follow in Sharon Presbyterian Church cemetery.
Memorials may be made to St. Stephen United Methodist Church or the Humane Society.
