

Born January 30, 1935 in Brooklyn, New York, he was the son of the late Melvin Avedon and the late Ray Goldberg Avedon. Following graduation from Thomas Jefferson high school, Don studied at Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute and worked for Bell Telephone Laboratories in New York, and later moved to New Jersey and Connecticut. His career began as a draftsman and then he progressed to become an expert and industry leader in information technology and document management. Don wrote several books in his field, was active in his professional associations, including holding leadership roles, received several awards and recognition, and was a frequent speaker at conferences. Don served as the Executive Director of the Association of Information and Image Management (AIIM) in Washington, DC where he lived and raised his family, in Potomac, Maryland.
Don was able to travel all over the world through his professional work and on vacations. Through his travels and work he made lifelong friends in many countries. He loved international travel and especially enjoyed visiting Singapore, Brazil, Denmark and Russia. After a long and successful career, he retired to Sun City in Bluffton, South Carolina where he lived for twenty years. In 2019 he moved to Mathews, North Carolina in Windsor Run a continuing care community south of Charlotte.
Don was a leader in the community in Sun City where he engaged in many clubs and community activities. He wrote articles for the local paper on a regular basis, researching and sharing information on many current events and topics of interest to senior citizens. He served as the President of the Interclub Council in Sun City and was a regular speaker and leader in the “Money Talks Club.” He also enjoyed being involved the “Woodworkers Club” and the “Computer Club.” Don also helped plan the building of the community theater, “Magnolia Hall.” Don could be seen regularly on the walking trails and always greeted others kindly and with his warm smile.
Don was a devoted family man. He met the love of his life and wife of 63 years, the late Edith Kosches Avedon, in Peekskill NY when their families were spending time in the summer “in the country,” near Lake Mohegan. Don and his father built the summer home in Peekskill over several years. Don and Edith married on March 16, 1957 and had two children, four grandchildren and one great grandson. His family was his pride and joy.
Don is survived by his son Roy Avedon (Patti) of Bluffton, SC, his daughter Marcia Avedon (Charles Farrar), his grandchildren Monica Farrar Miller (Garret Miller) of Seattle, WA, Alden Farrar of Ridgewood, NY, Mitchell Avedon of Severn, MD, and Spencer Avedon of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, and his great grandson, Grayson Miller of Seattle, WA; as well as his brother Barry Avedon of St. Petersburg, FL.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Ray Avedon and his wife Edith Avedon.
A service to celebrate Don’s life will be held at 11:00 am Monday June 20th, 2022 at the Hebrew Cemetery of Greater Charlotte, 1801 Statesville Avenue, Charlotte, NC. There will be a luncheon following the memorial service at Baoding, 4722 Sharon Rd. F. in Charlotte – serving Chinese food, Don’s favorite.
