Cindy Brookshire

Thank you to all who have shared in celebrating the memory of our Dad. Here are some thoughts I wrote and shared at his memorial service: "I'm Cindy Brookshire, the fourth of Pat and Don Cathey's five children. As a child I took it for granite that my Dad was kind and gentle…as I grew up I realized he was a rare and beautiful man. At church when we learned about the fruit of the spirit, his five children clearly understood what that meant because we saw it first hand on a consistent basis at home. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control were always at the top of the list of things my Dad wanted us to learn from him. He was a very patient man and one of his favorite things to say to us was “what's your hurry?”. I learned a lot over the years from thinking about those simple words…but understand them more today than ever. I don't remember Dad asking for anything except a handshake or a hug. Material things were not important to him unless you tried to throw something away. In the 60's and 70's before most people thought much about the energy crisis, we had to turn the heat down to 65 degrees and wear a sweater because he explained we needed to do our part to conserve the limited amount of energy left in the world. He believed in recycling before there were recycling bins and was always willing to happily eat any leftovers in the refrigerator. My husband and children accuse me of the same conservative nature and often question how old something is before they'll eat it. As much as I would like to believe I was my Dad's favorite child, I know he didn't have favorites. He loved everyone the same without judgment or criticism. His humble nature and attitude toward people made us all thankful to know him as a person and very proud to call him Dad.

Don was a relative of my late husband,Jack C. Cathey. We used to meet with Don to plan the "Cathey Family" reunions. My son, Jack M. Cathey , and his wife Anne knew Don through Forest Hills Church. Don and his wife were special people. Please accept my sympathy.

I have the fondest memories of growing up with Mr. Cathey's mother, Rosa. I enjoyed those times taking my grandmother, his Great Aunt Polly, to the lake and all the trips I got to make with Rosa when she took my Grandmother everywhere! Thinking of Cindy and EACH one of you during this time. Your father and mother were certainly kind and special people. God Bless! Kathy Arnold Stultz (daughter of Marks and Edna Arnold)
