Donald W. Hornburg grew up on a farm in Silver Creek, NY. The Hornburg family raised grapes and tomatoes for many years. He excelled in many sports during his school years including basketball, baseball and track.
He later served in the army during the Korean War. After his military service he was a cum laude graduate from the University of Buffalo where he received a B.S. in Accounting. He was a member of the Alpha Kappa Psi fraternity.
He met his loving wife, Rita, in the summer of 1953 and were married in the fall of 1955. Throughout their 55-year marriage they moved to several cities during his 30-year career as a CPA, retiring as a partner from Haskins and Sells (now Deloitte and Touche). Don and Rita have five children and six grandchildren.
Don enjoyed playing golf and tennis as well as family activities like bowling, traveling and playing cards.
His prized possession was his 1967 Camaro Convertible that remains in the family with his son Matt. Don loved his ‘67 Camaro and often took all the kids for a ride sitting on the back where the roof drops down. He was also a huge lover of country music including Roger Miller, Lefty Frizell and especially Johnny Cash. One of his favorite songs was “Only the Good Die Young,” but the children often joked that would never happen to him.
In our hearts our father will remain “39,” since every birthday that was the age he claimed to be.
He is survived by his wife, Rita of Charlotte, NC; his daughters, Melinda, Julie and Monica; and sons, Mark and Matthew. He was predeceased by his parents, Fred and Hertha and his brother, Robert. At his request there will be no service. In his memory, donations can be made to The Horse Protection Society of NC
