Doreen was born September 4, 1938 in Illford Essex, England where she was also raised. Years later on a train in that same town she met Fred Elliott, a Tech Sargent in the US Air Force. Fred and Doreen fell in love and married in London in 1958, moving to the United States a year later. They celebrated the birth of their only child, Karen, in 1960 and lived in various parts of the US and in London. In 1970 the family made Charlotte their permanent home.
In Charlotte, Doreen cultivated two of her greatest passions; gardening and raising dogs. She and her family worked diligently for over thirty years to turn their sparse lawn into a certified wildlife sanctuary full of trees, flowers and bird feeders. In Charlotte, Doreen also began training dogs, joining the Piedmont Kennel Club and Charlotte Dog Training Club. As a faithful supporter of the Charlotte Humane Society she rescued and raised many dogs over the years.
In her years working for Royal Insurance, Doreen made many long-term friends who remained important parts of her life even after her retirement. In retirement Doreen spent much of her time researching, purchasing and restoring antique Victorian clothing. An expert seamstress, she learned French hand sewing, and created many Christening gowns and garments for friends and family.
Doreen is predeceased by her loving husband of nearly 50 years, Fred Elliott. She is survived by her daughter, Karen Patton; son-in-law, David Patton; granddaughters, Caitlin and Devon Patton and her beloved dogs, Tootsie and Hurri.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2 PM, at St Andrews United Methodist Church 1900 Emerywood Dr., Charlotte, NC, 28210.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Levine Cancer Institute and Levine and Dickson Hospice House for their loving care and support.
