Doris Marion Rousso, 91, left this world surrounded by her family on Friday, January 4, 2019. Doris was born in Brooklyn, New York on August 30, 1927. Following the death of her young father she was sent to Tucson, AZ to be with family, where she met Albert (Al) Rousso and fell in love. They courted between Tucson and Brooklyn until they married in 1946 and moved to San Bernadino, CA where Al began his career in the jewelry business. The young couple then moved to Charlotte, where Al settled in as lead salesman at Brownlee Jewelers.
Doris brought a great deal of imagination to raising four boys who could not have been luckier to have her as their mother. She was an active member of Temple Israel Sisterhood. Later she volunteered for Guardian ad Litem. She campaigned hard for her husband's two mayoral runs. The queen of needlework, she had the soul of a true artist and created many needlepoint and knitted masterpieces. Doris will be well-remembered for her fabulous cooking, often featuring Sephardic dishes, and other original fare that could only be made by "Grandma."
She is survived by her sons who brought her daughters: Steven Rousso (Robyn) of Marietta, GA; David Rousso (Sandie), Harold Rousso (Lyba), Paul Rousso (Joy), all of Charlotte; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; her sister Mimi Lewitt (Leonard) of Portland, Oregon. She was preceded in death by her husband Al Rousso; her mother Toby Gold Hirsh, and her father Harry Hirsh.
Funeral services will be on Monday, January 7, 2019 at 11 AM at the Levine Chapel of the Hebrew Cemetery, 1801 Statesville Ave., Charlotte, NC. Interment will follow.
In lieu of floral donations, gifts may be made to Jewish Family Services.
