Douglas Roach Beard, Jr. died November 17, 2018 in Charlotte, NC at Asbury Care Center. He was born June 12, 1932 in Wadesboro, NC to Douglas Roach Beard, Sr. and Evelyn Lucy Nichols. Doug attended Phifer College for two years and graduated from Duke University in 1955. He received a Master of Divinity from Duke Divinity School in 1959. During his 43 years of ministry he served a number of congregations throughout the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church.
After retirement he and Doris eventually moved to Pawleys Island, SC. He continued to serve in ministry at Belin United Methodist Church in Murrells Inlet, S.C. by serving communion the first Sunday of every month, including just this past August. Over the years he lead many workshops and retreats teaching marriage enrichment to couples and couples planning to be married. He lead a group of young people to Scandinavia as part of an exchange program with the Methodist churches there.
Doug loved celebrating on many occasions with his three daughters, their husbands, grandchildren, extended family and friends. There were trips to the mountains, lakes, a cruise to Alaska, as well as time spent with them at his beach home.
Doug is survived by his wife Doris Killough Beard; brother, John Nichols Beard (Darlene) Charlotte, NC, ; sister, Sybil Lee Tyler, Tulsa, OK; children Victoria York Beard of McComb, Illinois; Evelyn Patrice Wiley (Scott) Alpharetta, Georgia; Billie Nichols Peterson (David) Davidson, NC, children by marriage Kelly Ann Bunn, Cheshire, CT; Steven Edward Bunn, Huntersville, NC ; Grandchildren: Victoria Claire Richards (Ryan), McComb, Illinois, Margaret Anne Dexter, Winter Park, Fl. , Savannah Claire Wiley, Allisa Page Wiley, Thomas Allen Wiley lll, Alpharetta, Georgia; James Alexander Bunn, Harrisburg, NC, Mallory Nicole Bunn, Harrisburg, NC, Chloe LeAnn Bunn, Huntersville, NC, Georgia Grace Capobianco, Cheshire, CT; Great grandchildren: Landon Gregory Richards, Kailyn Ruth Richards, McComb, Illinois, RJ Sinclair, Harrisburg, NC and many nieces and nephews and their children.
He was predeceased by a niece Karen Elizabeth Beard, Charlotte, NC, brother-in-law Gordon Burt Tyler, Tulsa, OK. and stepson James C. Bunn, Oak Island, NC.
A service to celebrate Doug's life will take place on Friday, November 23rd 2018 at 11:00 am at Myers Park United Methodist Church, Charlotte, NC , officiated by Dr. James Howell. Interment will follow the service at Sharon Memorial Park, Charlotte, NC. The family would like to thank caregivers at Asbury Care Center and the nurses, chaplain, and social worker at Charlotte Hospice.
