Douglass Scott Hindley (Scott) died peacefully at his home on Friday, April 10th, surrounded by his family. Scott was born on May 7, 1936 in Tacoma, WA. He was raised in Evanston, IL and was adored by his two beloved younger siblings, Sue and Ron. Music played a tremendous role in Scott’s childhood. Scott loved playing the flute, so much so that his mentor, Dr. John W. Beattie, used a photo of Scott and his flute to illustrate an article he wrote for the World Book Encyclopedia.
Scott’s love of music brought him to Denison University, where he sang in the glee club and a barbershop quartet. While at Denison, Scott met the love of his life, Mary Lou Hodges, and they were engaged within two weeks!
Scott and Mary Lou raised their family in Potomac, MD. He was an adoring father to his daughter Linda and son Jim. Scott relished putting on bathtime shows for them with his ukelele. He was also an avowed car enthusiast and attended numerous races with Jim throughout the United States and Canada. Scott loved spending time at Bethany Beach, playing music, and attending his brother’s Marine Corps Band concerts with his family. He and Mary Lou enjoyed many memorable trips visiting Scott’s sister Sue and her husband Gordon in London.
Upon retirement from a long career in telecommunications sales, Scott taught Catholic confirmation classes and served as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion. He became an avid swimmer—waking up every day at 4:00am to swim. And he was a loving and dedicated Papa to his three granddaughters, Susanna, Laurie, and Janie, picking them up from middle and high school every afternoon, plying them with Werther’s caramels, and spending many family vacations with them at the beach.
Scott is survived by his devoted wife Mary Lou, daughter Linda and her husband John Booth, son Jim Hindley, granddaughters Susanna Booth and fiancé Samir Paul, Janie Booth and fiancé Ethan Loewald, and Laurie Booth. Also remaining to cherish his memory are his sister Sue Joiner and sister-in-law Michelle Hockett. He is also survived by sister-in-law and her husband, DJ and Larry Fleming; and sister-in-law and her husband Ruthie and Joe Davis. Scott was predeceased by brother Ron Hockett and brother-in-law Gordon Sturrock.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 24th at St. Gabriel Catholic Church.
