

He was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, one of eleven children to the late Giles L. Cloninger and Margaret Glover Cloninger and a graduate of Berryhill High School. He retired from the United States Postal Service spanning from July 5, 1949 to April 1, 1988.
Earl was a member of Salem United Methodist Church in Denver, Lincoln Squares, East Lincoln Christian Ministries, Relay for Life in Lincoln County and the East Gate Lodge No. 692 in Matthews, NC
Due to outstanding community work and service, Earl and his wife, Dot, were chosen as the Grand Marshalls for the Denver Christmas Parade.
He is survived by his four children: David Cloninger and his wife, Mary; Richard Cloninger, Rebecca Cloninger and Denise Renaud and her husband, Charles; six grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 76 years, Doris "Dot" Cloninger, parents, his son Scott Cloninger and grandson, Casey Cloninger and his ten siblings.
The family will greet friends from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM, Saturday, the 21st of February, 2026 at Salem United Methodist Church, 378 N. Pilot Knob Road, Denver, NC . A service to celebrate his life will be held at 11:00 AM in the Sanctuary with The Reverend Eric Lane, Pastor, officiating. Committal will follow in the church cemetery.
