Edna Hough Helms

Edna Hough Helms, 97, of Charlotte, NC, born February 10, 1915 in Wadesboro, NC was many things: wife, parent, grandparent and great grandparent, gardener and church member. She loved children and operated a child day-care for many years. She was excellent at these endeavors, but she will mostly be remembered for her faith in Jesus and her love for family. Because of her faith in Jesus, Edna peacefully met Him and her husband, Thomas Floyd Helms, in the early morning hours of May, 8, 2012.

The family has many fond memories of their matriarch. Perhaps most notable of these are the year that, “Mamaw”, as she was lovingly known, purchased a go-kart for her grandchildren’s’ use. Though the grandchildren got their fair share of rides, no one got more miles under their belt than her.

Five generations of Edna’s family enjoyed the comforts of the “big-house” and “little-house”, on North Sharon Amity Road in Charlotte, NC.

The Helms family will greet friends Friday, May 11, 2012 from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM at Oakhurst Baptist Church. A service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Helms will follow at 2:00 PM from the sanctuary of Oakhurst Baptist with The Reverend Don McCollum officiating. Burial will follow in Sharon Memorial Park.

We all miss her deeply, but we are comforted by knowing we will be reunited with her and Dad someday. We have all shared ten decades of unbounded love and beautiful memories with her. Edna is survived by her three sons: Thomas Floyd , Jr. and wife, Lisa of New York, NY; James Everett and wife, JoAnn of Summerville, SC and Coy Franklin of Stallings, NC; two daughters: Mary Lail of Charlotte, NC and Susan Brewer and husband, Randy of Greer, SC; ten grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren. Mrs. Helms was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Floyd Helms and a granddaughter, Mary Elizabeth Brewer.

Memorials may be made in remembrance of Mrs. Edna H. Helms to her church, Oakhurst Baptist Church, 5037 Monroe Road, Charlotte, NC 28205.
