Edward Lester Varnie, 68, entered into eternal rest on Saturday May 8, 2021, peacefully passing away at his home surrounded by family.

Born October 12, 1952 in Harbel, Liberia (West Africa), he was a son of the late Edward Lester Varnie Sr. and Willette Peal. He worked as a computer technician at Firestone Natural Rubber Company before coming to America in 1979, spending time in Oklahoma City (Oklahoma), where he earned his associates in Informational Technology at Oscar Rose Junior College. He later moved to Orange County (California), and settled in Charlotte (North Carolina).

Ed’s passions included a deep love and knowledge for music, as he was known to host memorable gatherings that kept people on the dance floor. Though he donned a mellow laid-back demeanor, his warm smile and compelling storytelling made him the ultimate showman. He also enjoyed computer technology, films and capturing moments with photography.

Ed was a loving and devoted spouse, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle and friend. He was the type to make everyone feel at home as his house had an open door policy. He would never hesitate to help a person in need as the word “no” was rarely in his vocabulary. He also had a sweet spot for children. His one-of-a-kid spirit was felt by all who knew him.

Ed is survived by his wife, Beatrice Nimely Varnie; two daughters, Willette Varnie and Diane Varnie; two sons, Edward Bobby Varnie and Edward Lester Varnie Jr.; a grandson, Derrick “DJ” Neal Jr.; two sisters, Catherine Raynes and Blanche Fallah; and a brother, Victor Varnie.

Funeral services are planned for 1:00 pm Saturday, May 22, 2021 at McEwen Funeral Service, 6300 Mallard Creek Road, Charlotte, NC 28262. Friends may attend the viewing with the family from 12:00pm to 1:00 pm. Committal services and burial will follow in Gethsemane Memorial Gardens, 1504 West Sugar Creek Road, Charlotte, NC 28262. I met Ed Varnie in Oklahoma City in the eighties and became great friends with him. His great wife and life partner Beatrice is a" Bomi Hills" lady that I have known since our parents worked for the Liberia Mining Company in Bomi Hills.
Eddie was kind, trustworthy, empathetic and a model family man.
May Heavenly Father comfort Bea and all of Eddie's immediate family. Eddie will be deeply missed . Rest in peace Eddie !!!

I met Ed when we both worked in the Firestone Computer Center in the mid 70s. He was a nice gentleman to be with, full of life and energy. Ed was also a talker and we engaged in long conversations on the phone until I had to say “Ed, I got to run”. He loved his family and we shared many family stories.

My condolences to Bea, the children and the rest of the family.

May His Soul Rest In Peace!

Ma Bea and the rest of the family, I am so sorry for the death of your beloved ED. He was a family man. The Bible says that God will wipe all tears from their eyes. There will be no crying no pain. My dear family, take heart. God never gave you many burdens that you cannot bear. Be strong in God's unchanging hands. You all are in my thoughts and prayers. Sleep on Ed Varnie, until we meet again

Ed and Miss Bea were like second parents to me. They opened up their home and allowed me to spend a lot of time there with my best friend Willette while my Mom and Dad worked. They treated me with love and guidance, like I was one of their own. I will forever be grateful for you guys allowing me to be a part of your family. Ed you will be greatly missed! Miss Bea I love you! Willette, Diane, and Edward sending lots of love during this difficult time. I love you guys!
