Ruth graduated from Central High School in Chattanooga where she met her husband, James “Pete” K. Brown Sr. They were married in 1949, and he preceded her in death in September of 1981. They were married for 32 years. She worked and owned a family construction and building supply company. She stayed active up to her retirement in 2009 as she enjoyed working with her family and the many long-time employees.
Ruth and Pete enjoyed many years of travel but especially trips to New York to enjoy Broadway musicals and plays. They loved dancing and entertaining friends and family. After Pete’s death, Ruth continued to enjoy dancing and loved time spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was an outstanding cook. Holiday cooking, summer cookouts, and parties were her favorite and most enjoyable times; cooking and entertaining family and friends was a passion for Ruth. She rarely cooked to “a recipe," preferring to add her own touch. She will be remembered for her joyous love of life and family, as she touched so many.
Her siblings all pre-deceased her and they were her brothers, Jack Breneman (Chattanooga, TN), Frank Breneman (Indian Trail, NC), Mary Lillian Rue (Rock Hill, SC) Dorothy Day (Flintstone, GA), William Breneman (Waxhaw, NC), James Breneman (Charlotte, NC), Carl Breneman (Charlotte, NC), Martha Bentley (Gastonia, NC), Jerry Breneman (Charlotte, NC).
She is survived by their three children, Nikki O’Donnell (Colvin) of Mount Pleasant, SC, Rick Brown (Charlotte) of Charlotte, NC and Sheila Williams of Charlotte, NC; four wonderful grandchildren, Nathan Brown (Beth) and Tyler Brown (Lauren) of Charlotte, NC, Nicole Walker (Kyle) of Kailua, HI, and Summer Johnson (Joel) of Mount Pleasant, SC; and five delightful great-grandchildren, Keira Brown, Peyton Johnson, Laine Johnson, Kayley Walker and Griffin Walker. She was also blessed with so many nieces and nephews coming from such a large family.
A visitation will be held from 1:00 to 3:00 pm on Friday, September 10, 2021 at McEwen at Myers Park, 500 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC. Ruth will be laid to rest next to her husband in a private interment at Evergreen Cemetery in Charlotte, NC.
The family would like to express much love and gratitude to the Hospice & Palliative Care - Charlotte Region for their assistance in the months of care provided to Ruth and the family. Everyone involved in her care were outstanding and caring people adding much support and serenity to the final months and days for Ruth and her family.
In lieu of flowers, a gift to Hospice is appreciated.
