She was born July 13, 1916 in Union, SC, the daughter of the late William Hugh Burris and Nina Colton Burris, and was raised on the Cooper River waterfront of the old village in Mt. Pleasant, SC. She graduated from Central High School in Charlotte, NC in 1935 and went on to attend Queens College, where she was a member of Chi Omega sorority. She later worked at the college and furthered her career at the Federal Reserve Bank.
Eleanor was a member of St. Martin's Episcopal Church, where she taught Sunday school, and worked on the Altar Guild for many years. Her greatest gift was for being a loving mother, wife, and homemaker. Mimi, as her family affectionately called her, was a wonderful cook and a gracious host to all who came to her home.
An avid swimmer into her early nineties, she logged many miles at the Park Road YWCA and the Charlotte Mecklenburg Aquatic Center. She never met a stranger, and her southern charm and wit were a delight to those who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Edwin Stowe, and her daughter, Eleanor Stowe Simpson, and is survived by her son, Samuel Edwin Stowe Jr., her grandson, Wallace Worsham Simpson III, and many nieces and nephews.
Her service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, February 5th at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church, 1510 E. 7th St., in Charlotte. The family will receive friends following the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Martin's Church or the Humane Society of Charlotte.
