
Mrs. Hood, age 101, of Charlotte, NC, a resident of Legacy Heights Assisted Living, formerly of Exeter Road, passed away on December 8, 2011.
Born March 20, 1910 in Mecklenburg County, she was the daughter of the late Robert Lee Hunter and Mary Elizabeth Parks Rodgers Hunter. She was a member of Caldwell Memorial Presbyterian Church for over 65 years, where she was awarded the Honorary Life Member of the Presbyterian Women. She was also a faithful choir member and a Sunday School teacher in the Junior Department for over 25 years.
Mrs. Hood attended Flora McDonald College and was a graduate of Western Carolina College (University) with a major in elementary education and a minor in voice. She was a teacher with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools for over 25 years with her longest position, a sixth grade teacher at Sharon Elementary School.
She was a member and past Registrar for the Jane Parks McDowell Chapter of the DAR.
Preceding her in death, in May, 2000, was her husband of 63 years, Lloyd Neal Hood. Also preceding her in death were three brothers, Graham Hunter, Parks Hunter, and Len Hunter, and five sisters, Emily Lee, Barbara Howie, Frances Adams, Mary Stilwell, and Susan Todd.
Survivors are three children, Janice H. Johnson and husband Steve of Charlotte, Neal Hood and wife Bonnie of Charlotte, and Harriette H. Bonkemeyer and husband Ed of Greensboro; grandchildren, who fondly knew her as “Mama Elise”, David S. Hood and wife Melanie of Charlotte, Christine H. Vico and husband Alfredo of Thousand Oaks, California, Thomas S. Johnson, Jr. and wife Kimberly of Charlotte, Melissa J. Mills and husband Danny of Raleigh, Virginia B. Rushing and husband Mike of Cumming, Georgia, and Kathryn B. Ezell and husband Daniel of Conover; great-grandchildren, John, David and Caroline Hood of Charlotte, Matias, Julianna, Lucas and Analia Vico of Thousand Oaks, California, Tyler and Parker Rushing of Cumming, Georgia, and Robert and Hunter Mills of Raleigh.
The family will receive friends and family from 10:30 until 11:45 a.m. on Tuesday, December 13, 2011 at Harry & Bryant Company, 500 Providence Rd., Charlotte. A service by the graveside will be held at 12:30 p.m. at Sharon Memorial Park, 5400 Monroe Rd., Charlotte, with the Reverend John Cleghorn officiating.

The family would like to thank the staff at Legacy Heights for the wonderful care, love, and kindness they had for our mother for many years. We appreciate, and will remember, all they did for her. Also, many thanks as well to Hospice of Charlotte for their care during mother’s final days.
