Elizabeth (Betty) Athanas, 86, died Sunday, March 20th 2022 at Walton Wood assisted living center. She is survived by her two sons Evan Athanas (Emily) and Michael Athanas (Valerie) and her five grandchildren, Lillian, Austin, Ella, Kosta and Sia.
Elizabeth was born in Philadelphia, PA on November 7th, 1935 and was later spent her childhood in Boston, Massachusetts. She attended nursing school at Boston General Hospital and became a Certified Nurse Anesthetist. She was a pioneer in her field as she was one of the first women to become a CRNA. She moved to Charlotte with her late husband, Dinos Athanas in 1967 and spent the majority of 40 year career at Carolinas Medical Center and Mercy Hospital.
She retired in 2007 and spent her retirement traveling with her husband and doing volunteer work at the Children’s Clinic of Charlotte. She enjoyed traveling, hosting dinners for friends and spending time with her grandchildren. She was a member of Saint Matthew Catholic Church.
Betty will be remembered as dedicated and fiercely loyal wife, mother and grandmother who loved her sons and grandchildren.
