A service to honor and celebrate her life will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 23rd at St. Giles Presbyterian Church: 2027 Emerywood Drive in Charlotte, with a reception immediately following. Liz was raised in Smyrna, Georgia, and a service will be held there at Carmichael’s Funeral Home: 2950 King Street, at 12:00 noon on Friday, April 25th. There will be visitation beforehand at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be at Westview Cemetery.
Elizabeth (known to most as Liz) was born to Gardner Allen and Emily Peel Potter on June 19, 1944. She is predeceased by her parents, her dear Aunt Margaret, and her son-in-law, Chris Morley. She is survived by her daughter Kristy, grandsons Corban and Zane, her brothers Allen (Susan), Johnny (Dianne), Bobby (Brenda), along with numerous loving nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Liz graduated from Campbell High School in Smyrna, Georgia in 1962, where she was a cheerleader, honor student and voted most attractive by her Senior Class. She graduated from Mercer University with a B.A. in Math and a minor in Economics in 1966. At Mercer, she was Treasurer, Vice-President and President of Chi Omega, and the Sweetheart of Sigma Nu.
Upon graduation, she settled in Charlotte and pursued a career in computer programming first at IBM and later for the Miller Clinic, Arnold Palmer Cadillac, the YMCA and others.
Liz had a far-reaching love for many family and friends. She enjoyed travel adventures in the U.S. and abroad, hiking, annual beach trips with family and friends, and time in Montreat, N.C. Her love for Jesus, evidenced by a faith as deep as the ocean and a passionate heart for prayer, meant that any who knew her also knew they were covered in prayer. Liz served the Lord in a variety of ministries at her church home, St. Giles. She passionately served in Aletheia ministry, Children's ministry, Sunday night prayer services, and poured over others with a gift of intercessory prayer. She was truly immersed in prayer life every day, participated in the YMCA National Day of Prayer, CBS (Community Bible Study) as a leader and participant and made many prayer trips individually and with groups. At age 57 she embarked on a new adventure in retirement and went back to school at Columbia International University in S.C. for a Bible certificate.
She now knows fully what she only knew in part, dancing and rejoicing in the presence of Jesus. She will be deeply missed, and we await the day when we will meet again. Liz generously supported many ministries, locally and internationally.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor her with a generous gift to a ministry of your choice or to her beloved church community, St. Giles.
