In her own words, this is how Betty wanted her obituary to be written, no more, no less.
The rationale was inarguable: “I’ve paid for a newspaper my whole life, why spend more money on it when I’m gone?” Fair enough, Grandma, this one’s on us. We think your 98 years and four-generational legacy deserve a bit more page space.
From her birth in Hartford, CT to her peaceful passing in Charlotte, NC, Betty’s accomplishments were many. As a college graduate, she pursued a career during the Second World War. She raised 5 children: Walter of Minneapolis (Sandra Resnick), Kathy Haver of Charlotte (Dennis), John who preceded her (Ann), Thomas of Charlotte (Jane), and Paul of Baltimore (Gayle). She saw 13 grandchildren grow and move all across the country, and was even able to meet her two great-grandchildren. Betty was a devout Catholic, fond of books and white wine, and was smarter than everyone else in the room combined. More importantly, she was smart enough to let those around her figure that out on their own. When faced with adversity (or needless complaints), her response was easy: “Tough.” A simple phrase she used to instill grit, duty, pride, and resiliency in those around her.
Along with her son John, her late husband Charles and late sister-in-law Ruth have been waiting patiently for her in heaven as she continued her role as matriarch of the Pickhardt family for 98 and a half years. She still excelled at Jeopardy every night (and made sure everyone knew not to call her from 7-7:30) and never missed one of our birthdays, anniversaries, or a happy hour. We will all do well to continue following the example of patience, knowledge, and quiet strength she modeled. May we be “tough” and do her proud. Rest in Peace.
