Elizabeth B. Stein

Mrs. Stein, of Charlotte, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on February 29, 2012, at the Levine-Dickson Hospice House. She was born on October 16, l914 in Youngstown, Ohio, a daughter of the late Dr. Charles and Harriet Ogle Boughton. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. George Stein, and her sisters, Mary Seeley and Cora Keenan.

Beth grew up in Philadelphia. She attended there the University of Pennsylvania's School of Fine Arts and the Philadelphia Institute of Art. Upon graduation, in l937, she married Dr. George Stein. They moved to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania where they raised their four children. In l980, they moved to Charlotte to be closer to their children and their families.

Beth was filled with "la joie de vivre". She was a strong, cheerful and loving presence. She found her bliss spending time with her family, bird (especially bluebird) watching, gardening, watercolor painting, enjoying works of art and classical music, sewing, knitting, writing letters, delving into and preserving family history, and traveling. In her lifelong quest to expand her horizons, she read avidly and eagerly shared the pearls of wisdom she would cull from her reading experiences. A member of the Charlotte Friends Meeting, she was deeply committed to advancing social justice, peace and loving, tender humanitarian service.

Beth is survived by four children, George Stein, Jr. of Charlotte, Barbara (Raj) Kumar of Charlotte, Charlotte (Brad) Heinzen of Jamestown, and Douglas (Carola) Stein of Bethany, Connecticut; three granddaughters, Jennifer Heinzen York, Erin Heinzen Cox, and Jessica Kumar Meadows; and two great-grandchildren. Her life is a light and inspiration for them, and they cherish the treasure trove of happy memories she has left them.

The memorial service for Beth will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 14, 2012 at the Charlotte Friends Meeting at 570 Rocky River Road in Charlotte, NC.
