Elsie Massey Campbell, aged 91, died peacefully at her home in Mooresville, North Carolina on March 9, 2018. Elsie, the daughter of the late Vernon and Dessie Helms Massey, was born in Charlotte, NC on March 29, 1926. She was the third child and eldest daughter of 11 children. Elsie has 4 surviving siblings to cherish her memory including Gene Massey of Waxhaw, John Massey of Monroe, Katharine Massey Robinson of Mint Hill, and Helen Massey Todd of Indian Trail.

Elsie was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Robert Leo Campbell, who passed in 1986. She was the loving mother of 6 children, Carolyn Campbell Ward and her husband, Robert; Sidney A. Campbell and his wife, Becky; Franklin Ray Campbell and his wife, Bobbi; Diane Campbell Airey; Gary R. Campbell and his wife, Angie; and Rebecca Campbell Squillacioti and her husband, John. Due to her long life, Elsie is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and many beloved sister’s-in-law, nieces, nephews, and cousins in her extended Massey and Campbell families.

Elsie graduated from Sharon High School of Charlotte in 1943. She was employed by Efird’s Department Store and then by Duke Power Company as a bookkeeper. Elsie initially retired to devote herself to her family and was a full-time mother until her youngest child went to kindergarten. She then returned to work as a bookkeeper for Rose’s Department Store before she was hired away by The Famous Mart where she was Manager of the Men’s Department for over 30 years until her retirement at age 79. Elsie then became nanny to two of her beloved great-grandchildren, whom she cared for until they moved to Louisiana a few years later. Elsie loved her entire family and devoted herself to their wellbeing and enjoyment of life throughout her days.

Elsie was a true Charlotte native and resided there for 78 years. She moved to Mooresville to be near family and enjoyed her beautiful home and yard there for the last 13 years of her life. After a recent illness, Elsie resided at home with the help of her children, grandchildren, and devoted caregivers. Elsie was a mother to all and will be remembered for her spirited determination and big heart.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 13, 2018 at the Chapel of McEwen Funeral Service at Sharon Memorial Park, Charlotte NC. Visitation to begin at 10:00 and a celebration of Elsie’s life at 11:00. Interment to follow immediately after the service at Sharon Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, Donations may be made to the Levine & Dickson Hospice House – Huntersville.
