

Erwin Stowe Smith, Jr. “Smitty”, 86, of Charlotte, NC passed away on February 11, 2024. Erwin was a native-born Charlottean. He grew up on East 5th Street and was a member of St. John’s Baptist Church. He was a beloved brother, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Erwin had quite a sense of humor and was known for his quick wit. He had a love for travel and explored every State in the continental U.S. He even embarked on an adventurous journey to Alaska from Charlotte in his small camper!
After graduating from Central High School in 1955, Erwin attended North Carolina State University’s engineering program and later transferred to Clemson University to complete his education. During this time, he was a member of the ROTC program and later joined the United States Air Force National Guard, proudly serving until 1966.
After college, Erwin took on the job of Building Manager for the old YMCA on Morehead Street and then joined The Travelers Insurance Company as a Safety Engineer. He rose through the ranks at Travelers and retired as Regional Director for the Eastern United States in 1988.
Outside of work, Erwin had a passion for haggling and was known for his ability to negotiate deals. He enjoyed tinkering with various objects and always found joy in the process. Erwin was also a devoted Clemson fan and made sure to watch every football game.
Erwin had MANY friends throughout his career and long life. He loved Charlotte and North Myrtle Beach, had homes in both locations, and spent time equally in both. He was a board member of the HOA, and enjoyed socializing with friends and observing the activity around the pond at the beach from his recliner.
“Smitty” will be remembered for his humor, love for travel, and dedication to his family. His legacy will live on through the cherished memories shared by all who knew and loved him.
Erwin is survived by his sister, Margaret (Peggy) Tyson of Charlotte and her family, numerous cousins; his son, Erwin Stowe Smith III (Lynne) of Charleston, SC; his granddaughter, Shannon Kirby (Doug) of Lexington, SC; his grandsons, Garrett (Thais) of Charleston and Ryan (fiancée Lydia) of Anderson, SC; his daughter, Susan Laurie Ledford (Mike) of Waxhaw, SC; his grandson, Josh (Kenzie) of Rock Hill, SC; and granddaughter, Katelyn Rapp (Matt) of Waxhaw, NC. Additionally, Erwin is survived by six great-grandchildren, and two more expected in March.
Erwin was preceded in death by his parents, Erwin Stowe Smith and Eva Russell Smith, and a brother-in-law, William (Bill) Tyson.
