

Evelyn Yandle Lewis of Charlotte, died Tuesday, May 21, 2013. Born near Indian Trail, NC on September 16, 1917, she was the middle of seven children of Ramsey S. and Sadie Ballentine Yandle. She graduated valedictorian from Indian Trail High School, moved to Charlotte, and worked for ten years as a bookkeeper for Hudson Hosiery.
Evelyn was athletic, loved sports and competition, and played on the Indian Trail girls’ championship basketball team, and many local softball teams. She entered, and was crowned “Miss Charlotte” in 1935 at age 17 by the VFW auxiliary. After WWII she married real estate businessman, W.J. Lewis. Evelyn had a life-long love of children and animals, spent time as a Hawthorne Lane United Methodist Church Cub Scout Den-mother, a Presbyterian Hospital volunteer, and loved to walk the woods and fields in Union County.
Evelyn is survived by one son, Bill, of Charlotte, and many nieces and nephews in Tarboro, Rocky Mount, Charlotte, Atlanta, Ohio and Florida.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 24th in the chapel of Harry and Bryant, with Rev. Andrew Brown officiating. Interment will follow at Sharon Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 1:45 p.m. prior to the service.
