Born on October 17, 1916 in Vale, Lincoln County, North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Winfield Chester Johnson and Mina Ritchie Johnson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Gilchrist "Mac" McRae as well as siblings Eugene Johnson, Ethel J. Searcy, Fern J. Bass, Lillian J. Boiko, Cullen Johnson, Mace J. Brown, and Vivian J. Stegall. She is survived by her son, Donald G. McRae, Jr. and his wife, Martha, of Charlotte; her daughter, Sue McRae Ulshen and her husband, Martin, of Chapel Hill; grandchildren, Michael McRae and Nancy McRae of Charlotte, and Sarah Powell and Danny Ulshen of Chapel Hill.
During WWII, Evelyn served her country as an employee of the North Carolina Shipbuilding Company in Wilmington, NC. It was there that she met her husband, “Mac”. The couple moved to Charlotte in the mid 1940’s. Evelyn retired in 1981 as a Director from Kiddie Korner Day Schools after a long career caring for young children. In retirement, she continued to work part-time at the Norwood Garden Center.
Evelyn was a long-time member of Commonwealth United Methodist Church where - until prevented by failing health - she was active in the Choir and Circle programs. The consummate gardener, she loved plants, flowers, and the outdoors. In addition to working in her own yard, she enjoyed helping friends and family whose thumbs may not have been so green!
The family would like to thank the staffs of Peak Resources and Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region for the care and support extended to Evelyn and her family.
Visitation will be held from 6 until 8 pm on Tuesday evening, October 2, 2012, at Harry & Bryant, 500 Providence Road. The funeral service will be held at 2 pm on Wednesday, October 3rd at Commonwealth United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery.
