Flora Mena Soar Huntley, 89, of Charlotte, NC, died Monday, March 7, 2011. She was born March 26, 1921 in Auckland, New Zealand, a daughter of the late Lieutenant Colonel Frederick Charles and Flora Edna Soar.
Flora was a graduate of the University of Auckland, NZ and earned a Masters of History at Winthrop University. Flora worked 30 years with the Charlotte Mecklenburg school system. Her career started at Piedmont Junior High; she then went to Central High School, and moved to Garinger High on opening day. After 15 years at Garinger High, she worked with the gifted program in history, serving all high schools. Flora was active in various book clubs, including Virginia Dare as a founding member. She also was a member of ADK and Kappa Kappa Iota education sororities.
Flora was a member of Christ Episcopal Church and enjoyed bridge, book club, and story hour there. She also played bridge at Trinity Presbyterian Church. She volunteered at Crisis Assistance Ministries following retirement. Flora enjoyed reading, Scrabble, crossword puzzles, and Jeopardy.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, Frederick and Harry Soar.
Flora is survived by her sister, Edna Hartson (Michael) of Auckland, New Zealand; sons, Paul Huntley of Calabash, NC and Fred Huntley (Pam) of Charlotte; daughter, Gene Baker of Charlotte; grandchildren, Clay Beard (Holly), Chip Huntley (Jill), Wayne Beard, and Brandy Huntley; great-grandchildren, Brooke Beard, Tyler Huntley, and Nathan Huntley; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 11, 2011 at Christ Episcopal Church, 1412 Providence Road, Charlotte. Interment will follow in Sharon Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday evening, March 10th at Harry & Bryant Company, 500 Providence Road, Charlotte.
