

Mr. Austin, youngest son of 13 children of William Douglas Austin and Catherine Elizabeth Simpson Austin, was born January 1, 1927. Floyd was a Charlotte native, grew up in North Charlotte, attended Tech High School, was a veteran of the U. S. Navy and retired from the Charlotte Observer after 42 years of service. The Austin’s were longtime members of Whiting Avenue Baptist Church and later Hickory Grove Baptist Church. Floyd loved golfing and enjoyed his golf buddies for many years after his retirement. The Austin’s also loved square dancing and were members of the Sardis Stars Dance Club and enjoyed traveling all over the U.S. Recently he became interested in his Family Ancestry, and greatly enjoyed tracing his family roots across the Piedmont. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Estelle Hartsell Austin, son, Dale Austin and his wife Candy Austin, daughter, Susan Austin Craig and her husband Tom Craig, grandsons, Adam Austin, Andrew Austin and his wife Briana and granddaughter Elizabeth Belle Craig. Also, his brother William Douglas Austin (Bud) and his wife Inga-Lisa Austin and many more nephews, nieces, cousins and friends. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 P.M. Friday, February 11, 2011 at McEwen Funeral Service Charlotte Chapel, 5716 Monroe Rd, Charlotte, NC 28212 with a service in the funeral home chapel at 2:00 P.M. conducted by Reverend John Harrill.
