Frances Glenn died on April 5, 2012 at home with her family by her side. She was born on March 4, 1936 in Lynchburg, Virginia, the daughter of the late Emily Jane Glenn and Vernie James Glenn. She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Katie Stout.
Frances is survived by her daughter, Jane Johnson of Charlotte; her son, Bob Johnson and his wife Ginger of Monroe; and her daughter, Marian Stout and her husband Tom of Charlotte. She is also survived by her cherished grandchildren, David Johnson and Sarah Jane Stout.
Frances graduated from Suffolk High School in Suffolk, Virginia and attended RPI in Richmond, Virginia. After raising her children, she went to work as the school secretary at various schools in Charlotte Mecklenburg. From there she went to UNCC, where she was secretary to the Dean of the History Department until she retired in 2000.
Her life was dedicated to her children and grandchildren, who have had the joy of having a mother and grandmother who was intrinsically involved within their lives. She treasured family gatherings of every kind, but especially birthdays and Christmas. All occasions celebrated in her home were like royal events, and everyone who came into her home was embraced by her warmth. Love for her friends was a special joy, and she treated her friends as extended family. Her talents were many, but she took immense pleasure in gardening, and making her surroundings look picturesque. She also loved cooking, and her fried chicken and other specialties will be greatly missed. She taught us how to love, and the importance of putting others first. She was the consummate southern lady and very proud of her Virginia heritage.
A service to celebrate her life will be held Monday, April 9, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. at Avondale Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Dr. John Earl and the Reverend Jane Summey officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the MacLean Fellowship Hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Avondale Presbyterian Church, 2821 Park Rd., Charlotte, NC 28209 or to Presbyterian Hospice, P.O. Box 33549, Charlotte, NC 28233.
