Frances Hawkins

Joyce Hawkins Sutherland, daughter of the late Mr.& Mrs. Basil Haile, died Thursday, August 2, 2012. In addition to her parents, her brother, Zane Haile, and two husbands, Charles Hawkins and Eugene Sutherland, preceded her in death.

Joyce was born August 23,1922 in Princeton, KY and spent most of her adult life in Lexington, KY prior to moving to be with her only daughter, Carol Hawkins Smith (Charles), in Charlotte, NC in May 2012.

Joyce attended Northwestern University in Chicago during WWII. She was secretary of Clays Mill Elementary School for 32 years and past president of both the local and state Educational Secretaries Associations. She was a long time member of the Southern Hills United Methodist Church.

In addition to her daughter, she is survived by a grandson, Christian Zane Smith (China-Li), and great-grandson, Aiden Zane Smith, all of Las Vegas, NV; a step-son, Steve Sutherland (Joy); a step-daughter, Linda Sutherland; a step-grandson, Ryan Sutherland, all of Lexington, KY; a sister, Judy Winn, of Marion, KY; a sister-in-law, Mariam Haile, of Bonita Springs, FL; two nieces, Vivian Thomas(Richard) of Princeton, KY and Linda Browning, of Clarksville, TN.

A memorial to celebrate her life will be held at Southern Hills United Methodist Church in Lexington, KY, on Tuesday, August 7, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. Dennis Burrows will officiate.
