Born May 13, 1947 and raised in Lumberport, West Virginia to Bernard & Mildred Hayes. The youngest of 7 siblings, Gary moved to Charlotte, NC as a young adult and met the love of his life Sandra Hayes. Gary worked at Siemens/Westinghouse for 41 years. In 1977 Gary also began working as a server for one of Charlotte’s well-known restaurants, The Ranch House, to afford a Christian education for his two sons, Todd and Michael. After his retirement, Gary dedicated the majority of his time to his granddaughters.
He will be remembered as Papaw, a beloved grandfather who gave his granddaughters so many wonderful memories…summers at the beach house, picking them up from camp and school while bringing them a bag of goodies that was waiting in the car for them and many, many other sweet memories. He will be remembered as the patriarch; he was an amazing, selfless father and husband that devoted his life to his family. He will be remembered by friends who called him family [and knew him for the stubborn yet most tenderhearted man that he was], who loved him dearly and held visits with him close to their heart knowing that no matter what, Gary would always be there.
Gary was a member of Laurel Baptist Church where he faithfully attended in person until his sickness prevented him from sitting in a pew; he continued to watch sermons via live stream.
Gary is survived by his wife of 54 years, Sandra, son, Todd (Lisa), son Michael, granddaughters Hailey and Addison, granddogs, Toby and Rebel.
He is preceded in death by his parents Bernard and Mildred, brothers Lindy, Harold, Ronald, and James and sisters Lorraine, Loretta and Regina.
A celebration of Gary’s life will be Saturday, March 16th at 11:00am at Laurel Baptist Church 11801 Plaza Road Ext, Charlotte, NC.
The family will receive family and friends before the service from 10:00am-11:00am.
