

Born in Wadesboro, NC he was the son of the late John and Sarah Thompson. He graduated from Garinger High School and then enlisted in the United States Air Force. Gary served in the Vietnam War from 1967 to 1971 where he was awarded The National Defense Service Medal, The Vietnam Service Medal with one Bronze Service Star, The Air Force Good Conduct Medal and The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.
Gary was very strong in his Christian faith. In his earlier years, he enjoyed camping in the NC mountains. Throughout his life he rode motorcycles and was a member of the Patriot Guard where he participated in funeral escorts for Veterans.
He is survived by his two daughters, Carey Thompson Smith (Jack) and Jennifer Thompson Miller (Michael); his brother John W. Thompson, Jr (Sue); grandchildren Jordan, Joshua, Kacie, Brandy, Jack, Joseph, Sandra; twelve great grandchildren and one nephew, Benjamin.
Family will receive friends on Saturday, May 6th 2017 at McEwen Funeral Service at Sharon Memorial Park at 5716 Monroe Road in Charlotte at 10am. A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home chapel at 11am with interment immediately following at Sunset Memory Gardens in Mint Hill.

The Thompson family requests any motorcycle riders are welcome to participate in the funeral procession to Sunset Memory Gardens.
