Gayle M Aughtry

Dr. Gayle M. Aughtry passed away on 12/16/2017 after a long illness. She was the daughter of the late CB and Maryon Muse Meacham. She was a Charlotte native and graduated from Central High School in 1958 and went on to graduate from Appalachian State with a teaching degree in 1962. She taught for CMS after graduation and then went to work for WTVI in the 1970’s. She then became Principal at Cornelius Elementary and Wilson Middle Schools where she touched many lives. During this time, she returned to school to receive her Doctorate in Education from UNC Chapel Hill in 1995. She retired from CMS in 1995, but continued her love of education by working with student teachers at UNCC. Gayle loved education and made a positive impact on many lives throughout her time here on this earth. She was also an avid animal lover, but most of all she loved her family. Her husband John of 40 years, her children, Butch Aughtry (Susan), Connie Alexander, Annette Aughtry, and Darlene Rubright (Pete). Grandchildren, Shawn (Jason), Todd (Heather), Barry (Gratia), Brian (Misty), Cole, Jodi (Joey), and Butch. Great grandchildren, Elizabeth, Peyton, Jacob, Bryson, Ashton, Devin, Madison, Sarina, Mikayla, AJ, and Jaxon. Great, great grandchild Kyser and her beloved rescue dog Tucker. We would like to thank her three awesome caregivers whom she loved; Barbara, Terri and Debbie. She is also survived by her brother John Meacham (Jan) and sister Joan Wolfe (Mike). Gayle was loved by all who knew her and will be greatly missed.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, January 2, 2018 from 10:00am – 12:00pm at Forest Lawn West 4601 Freedom Dr. Charlotte, NC 28208. A memorial service will follow the visitation with Rev. Gene Boatwright officiating.
