George Kerbow McMillan of Charlotte, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on March 25, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Charlotte, North Carolina, on June 2, 1950, George was the son of the late Ella Kerbow McMillan and Albert Porter McMillan. He attended Catholic schools in Charlotte, graduating from Charlotte Catholic High School in 1968. He spent a postgraduate year at Hargrave Military Academy, before going on to East Carolina University where he received a BA degree in History in 1973.
George spent his career in the building supply business, beginning with Georgia Pacific before finding his home at Matthew Building Supply, where he worked for over 30 years until his death. Bo Hulsey and his many friends at MBS were like family to him.
George will be remembered for his passion, loyalty, and steadfast love of his family. Whether he was enjoying family celebrations, trips, or helping with household repairs and projects as the family handyman, George was always there for his family. He was a devoted husband to Shelley for 37 years, and took great joy in being a father to Eleanor. Whether it was cheering for her at all her sporting events, teaching her how to change a tire, bake a cheesecake, or encouraging her in her professional life, he was her greatest fan. His most recent pride and joy was his granddaughter, Riley, with whom he loved spending time.
George forged special bonds with his friends and treasured the time he spent with them. An avid outdoorsman, he spent many laughter-filled hours hunting and fishing, planting and tending vegetable gardens, playing tennis, swapping stories with neighbors in the cul-de-sac in the afternoons, and grilling barbecue ribs in his backyard. George found the friend of a lifetime in Jerry Houston. Over 37 years as next-door neighbors, Jerry and George bonded like brothers. We thank Jerry and his wife, Cheryl, for always being there for George and Shelley. Known for his dancing skills, George was a sought-after dance partner at weddings. He always said his favorite dance partner was his sister, Mary. George will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
George was preceded in death by his parents; his niece, Claire McMillan Horton; and his sister-in-law, Sally Hill McMillan.
He is survived by his loving wife, Shelley Spears McMillan; daughter, Eleanor McMillan Hower (Connor); sister, Mary McMillan Horton (Tom); brother, Ralph Reiss McMillan, nieces Sara McMillan and Dorothy McMillan Ryan (Paul) and their son Bennett, and granddaughter, Riley Claire Hower.
A memorial service will be held at 2pm on Saturday, April 25, 2026, at Myers Park Presbyterian Church, 2501 Oxford Place, Charlotte, NC 28207. The family will receive friends after the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial contributions be made to the charity of the donor’s choice in George’s honor.
