She was born in New York City on October 20, 1917, to Samuel and Rebecca Singer. She married the late Michael Gilbert on June 14, 1942. After Michael died in September 1995, Gertrude moved to Pikesville, Maryland where she lived until May 2005, when she moved to Murrells Inlet, SC, then to Eaglecrest Retirement in Myrtle Beach, and then to Brightwater in 2009.
Gertrude is survived by two daughters, Judy Pennington of Murrells Inlet, SC, and Susan Shuart of Charlotte, NC; two grandchildren, Annie (Ryan) of Yardley, Pa. and David (Mary Glenn) of Chalfont, Pa.; and four great-grandchildren, Micah, Zachary, Alexander, and Lillian.
Gertrude was a lively, happy woman who lived every day to the fullest until she became ill. She loved to dance, paint, knit, do beadwork, and play bridge and Mahjong. She was a joy to everyone who knew her and will be missed dearly by her family and many friends.
Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2012, at 11:30 a.m. at the Hebrew Cemetery in Charlotte.
